Saint Roch

Who was the Saint who our school is named after?

Saint Roch was born in Montpelier, France in 1295. He devoted much of his life to care for the poor and the sick. When he lost his parents when he was around 20 years of age, he gave up his noble lifestyle and his fortune.

Saint Roch became a pligrim. He encountered a village devastated by plague, and he stayed to care for the ill and the dying. He contracted the plague himself, and he strayed off to a forest to die.

In the forest Saint Roch befriended a dog and the animal fed him with food from his own master. Saint Roch began to feel better, and eventualy was cured.

He returned to his birthplace, where he was arrested and accused of being a spy. For five long years he lay in prison, not once mentioning his noble birth. During his time in jail he was cared for by an angel.

Saint Roch died in 1327.

Saint Roch's memorial day is the 16th of August.
